Kidney and Kiss get sinking feeling

The Irish Times - Monday - Sport - - Rugby -

Declan Kidney (right) and Les Kiss didn’t have to wait long for the bad news to drop on their desk at London Irish. In fairness the two former Irish coaches knew what was coming at the struggling side long before they left their jobs as Director of Sport at UCC and Ulster Rugby respectively.

The worst fears were realised on Saturday even though London Irish didn’t play until Sunday (they lost to Saracens 51-14) with their relegation from the Premiership coming after just one season back in the top flight. It is the second time in three years Irish have been relegated. Last month, the club tried to mix things up and change direction when they brought in coaches Kidney and Kiss to work under director of rugby Nick Kennedy, who subsequently resigned. The Exiles started this season with an eye-catching victory over Harlequins, but 14 successive league losses followed, a run that was eventually ended when they defeated relegation rivals Worcester at the Madejski Stadium two months ago. As Kidney might say “it is what it is.”
