Ire­land go down 2-0 to Bel­gium

The Repub­lic of Ire­land Un­der 17s got their Euro­pean Un­der 17 Cham­pi­onship cam­paign off to a dis­ap­point­ing start as they went down 2-0 to Bel­gium at Lough­bor­ough Uni­ver­sity Sta­dium on Sat­ur­day. Goals in ei­ther half from Sekou Sidibe and Yorbe Vertessen en­sured a clin­i­cal Bel­gian side claimed all three points.

Ire­land opened the brighter but fell be­hind in the 34th minute when Sidibe slot­ted home the re­bound af­ter Ni­co­las Raskin’s ini­tial ef­fort came back off the cross­bar. Adam Idah was de­nied by the Bel­gium goal­keeper on a num­ber of oc­ca­sions in the sec­ond pe­riod but with 12 min­utes re­main­ing Yorbe Vertessen was quick­est to a re­bound to put the Bel­gians two up.

Next up for Ire­land is Den­mark to­mor­row in St Ge­orge’s Park.
