Floodgates open late for England
Harry Kane scored twice as England earned a flattering 4-0 victory away to Malta on Friday to keep them firmly on course for next year’s World Cup finals.
Until the 85th minute Kane’s solitary strike was all that divided the sides, but a late flurry gave the scoreline a gloss that disguised a laboured and often guileless England performance.
Ryan Bertrand made it 2-0 in the 85th minute before stoppage-time goals from Danny Welbeck and Kane punished a tiring Malta.
In the same group, Scotland kept their qualification hopes alive with a convincing 3-0 win over Lithuania in Vilnius. Celtic midfielder Stuart Armstrong headed in his first senior international goal after 25 minutes and new Liverpool signing Andy Robertson curled in a glorious second five minutes later.
Midfielder James McArthur made it 3-0 from close range in the 72nd minute.
Holders Germany took a significant step towards qualification with a hard-fought 2-1 win in the Czech Republic.
