Keane takes bronze to break Ireland’s medal duck
Ellen Keane delivered on her billing as one to watch at the Paraswimming European Championships as she clinched the bronze medal that had eluded her and Team Ireland throughout the week.
In a thrilling race Keane was able to hold her nerve and touch in third place in a composed performance that saw her comfortably hold off the challenge of Zsofia Konkolyy by two seconds. Spain’s Nuria Marques led the 200m individual medley home followed by Toni Shaw from Great Britain, with Keane in third place.
Elsewhere, Longford’s Patrick Flanagan finished fourth in the final of the Men’s 400m freestyle, while Jonathan McGrath took sixth place finish in the Men’s 100m freestyle S8 event.
Ailbhe Kelly finished eighth in the women’s 100m freestyle, Cork’s Seán O’Riordan, came home in 8th position in the men’s 100 metre backstroke S13 while James Scully brought his best-ever performance in the 50m Freestyle S5 heats.
