Keane takes bronze to break Ire­land’s medal duck

Ellen Keane de­liv­ered on her billing as one to watch at the Paraswim­ming Euro­pean Cham­pi­onships as she clinched the bronze medal that had eluded her and Team Ire­land through­out the week.

In a thrilling race Keane was able to hold her nerve and touch in third place in a com­posed per­for­mance that saw her com­fort­ably hold off the chal­lenge of Zsofia Konkolyy by two sec­onds. Spain’s Nuria Mar­ques led the 200m in­di­vid­ual med­ley home fol­lowed by Toni Shaw from Great Bri­tain, with Keane in third place.

Else­where, Long­ford’s Pa­trick Flana­gan fin­ished fourth in the fi­nal of the Men’s 400m freestyle, while Jonathan McGrath took sixth place fin­ish in the Men’s 100m freestyle S8 event.

Ailbhe Kelly fin­ished eighth in the women’s 100m freestyle, Cork’s Seán O’Rior­dan, came home in 8th po­si­tion in the men’s 100 me­tre back­stroke S13 while James Scully brought his best-ever per­for­mance in the 50m Freestyle S5 heats.
