Twenty three per cent of the Irish population smoke (approx. 807,000 people); and about 19 per cent smoke every day.
Compared with non-smokers, smokers experience a three-fold increase in the rate of death from any cause, on average lose at least 10 years of life expectancy due to smoking and die from smoking related disease in 1-in-2 cases.
Anyone who wants to quit needs a supportive environment, support from health professionals, family and pharmacological aids and personal coping strategies.
