Few peo­ple were ex­pect­ing the Na­tional Front leader to suc­ceed where her fa­ther had failed and be­come pres­i­dent of France, but although she nearly dou­bled the num­ber of votes her fa­ther won in the 2002 run-off, she fell short of polling pre­dic­tions, with just 35 per cent, hand­ing a con­vinc­ing vic­tory to Emmanuel Macron.

The for­mer FBI direc­tor made life dif­fi­cult for him­self with his de­ci­sive in­ter­ven­tions in last year’s US pres­i­den­tial elec­tion, but it was still a shock when Don­ald Trump un­cer­e­mo­ni­ously fired him, on a flimsy pre­text, just as the agency’s probe into Rus­sian ties to the Trump cam­paign was heat­ing up.
