FAMINE WALK 1988-2018
Saturday, May 19th, Louisburgh, 1.30pm
Join the 30th anniversary Famine Walk from Delphi Lodge, Doolough, to Louisburgh in Co Mayo. Afri first organised the walk in 1988 to commemorate the Great Hunger of 1845-50. The walk retraces a journey of horror in March 1849, when two poor-law commissioners were instructed to appear at Delphi Lodge (10 miles away) at 7am the following morning. They walked the hilly road in wintry conditions, and at Delphi Lodge were refused food or admission to the workhouse, and began their weary return journey. Many died. Afri draws on the local history and that of all those facing the same grotesque and avoidable cruelties today, from the “war on terror” to direct provision. Walk leaders are Richard Moore and Fatin al Tamimi. Lisa Lambe joins the walk and provides the music. Register on eventbrite.ie or from 12.45pm in Louisburgh Town hall.
