Hamilton’s soundtrack

The Irish Times - - The Best Of Times Women's Hockey World Cup 2018 - John O’Sullivan

RTÉ’s George Hamilton has provided the commentating soundtrack to so many great occasions in Irish sport so it was fitting that he should be behind the microphone as Ireland’s edged past

Spain in a nerve-shredding, sudden-death penalty shootout in the semi-final.

Gillian Pinder – she had scored in the penalty shootout proper – provided Irish women’s hockey with the unforgettable moment, RTÉ the pictures and Hamilton, the words.

Some may be able to recite this by heart.

“Pinder against Ruiz, (louder) Pinder against Ruiz, Pinder, Pinder, (shouting) PPPPIIIIINNNDDDDERRRR. Ireland are in the World Cup final. That is incredible. This is the moment, 2018 is the year. The Green Army march on. Ireland are in the final of the World Cup and that has never ever, ever happened anywhere else before.

“Ireland . . . Ireland are in the final of the World Cup. The football boys got to the quarters, the rugby men have been there too, these women have pushed the boundary.”
