All they wanted for Christmas
Like all good sporting stories, music manages to inveigle its way into the tale at some point.
The Ireland hockey team’s party piece, so to speak, is the Mariah Carey hit All I Want for Christmas Is You, which they sang onstage at the homecoming on Dawson Street, but it was a song adopted at the start of the tournament.
Deirdre Duke explained the reason behind an unusual song choice for the July/August time of year. “It started the day before the US game; Zoe Wilson said it was just like Christmas Eve. “We started singing it at our strength and mobility session on the morning of the first game and then it caught on because every evening it felt like we were going into Christmas Day. When you think about it that way, it makes a lot of sense.” Mariah Carey offered her support on Twitter, having seen a clip of the girls’ performance on Dawson Street. The Lighthouse Family’s High was also popular with the squad.
