OBITUARY
The news of the death of popular localman Denis Crean, Knockglossbeg on Friday 23rd. February was met with deep sadness. Denis was an avid follower of Soccer and football all of his life playing with Camp and Annascaul in his young days. He was the founder and Manager of Camp United Soccer Club in 1970/71. And in those early years, an era of some great glory days for our parish football, Denis put together a local Camp soccer team. He named them Camp Construction and he entered them in the Kerry District League which was organised by Tralee Dynamos. Camp Construction had a great run in the league winning it out in 1982, beating some very prominent Tralee teams like the Tralee Builders and Rugby Club. Seamus O Driscoll Captained Camp Construction Soccer team and John Doyle a Kerry Senior player at that time was one of their star players. Mick O Dywer was less than pleased when John took a few nights away from the Kerry training schedule to train with Camp Construction.
And Denis went on to manage young Soccer teams in Camp as they came up over the years and in 2010 he was a very proud man when Camp United B team won the Tommy Healy Memorial Cup at Mounthawk park. And even in recent years, Denis followed Camp all over the county, coaching and encouraging them from the sideline, he was a true and loyal supporter to the end.
Denis spent a few years in London too, working in the buildings, a skilled carpenter, he could turn his hand to anything and on returning back home he built his own house and cultivated a lovely vegetable garden and the fruits of his labour, a bunch of spring onions were among the gifts brought to the altar at his funeral Mass at St. Marys Church, Camp on Monday. And in a fitting tribute to their colleague and mentor, Camp United Soccer shouldered Denis’s coffin to his final resting place in Camp Cemetary and on Sunday evening formed a guard of honour along the route to his home in Knockgloss beg. Fr. Gerry Keane PP assisted by Rev. Phyllis Jones celebrated the requiem Mass on Monday morning followed by burial at Camp Cemetary. And at the graveside Mairead Crean delivered a poignant and lovely eulogy to the life of her Uncle Denis. Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam dilis. Sympathy is extended to Irene and to his brothers, Paddy Joe, Hugh and Jack, sisters, Mary Ellen, Hannah, Helen and Anne, nieces, nephews, sisters in law, brothers in law, grand nieces and grand nephews and all of the extended family, relatives and friends.
