CONTRASTING fortunes for the two sides who topped Group A and Group B in the first phase as Churchill powered to another win over Sneem / Derrynane while Duagh were the victims of a shock win for Asdee in their match.

The St Brendans side powered to a 5-17 to 1-7 win over the fourth placed Group B side at home as Killian Fitzgerald and Ger McCarthy scored a brace of goals for themselves.

Sneem / Derrynane had scored the first two points before Churchill found their stride with the visitors’ goalkeeper Dylan Van Deale having to save well from McCarthy in stopping them getting another first-half goal.

Rory Galvin scored a goal for the South Kerry combination before the break in trailing by 2-12 to 1-5 at half-time but McCarthy’s goals meant there was never any chance of a dramatic turnaround as Jason Mortimer scored a fifth for Churchill in their 22 point victory.

Asdee’s victory was all the more startling considering it came away from home as they outscored their opponents by two points in the second period with both sides having gone in level at 0-5 apiece at the break.

Kieran Quirke. Tom Scanlon and Michael Kirby had given the hosts an early three point lead before points from Eoin Tydings Dara and Jack Keane had Asdee level at half-time.

Cyril Dineen and Dara Keane put Asdee ahead for the first time in the second-half and they led approaching the final 10 minutes before Duagh had a goal disallowed for a square ball late on with an insurance point soon following in an amazing 0-15 to 0-13 win for the visitors.

Asdee are now one win away from promotion as Valentia also find themselves in the same position after a tough battle with Moyvane down south. The visitors scored the opening five points of the game including a brace from Joe Coulson, but found themselves trailing by six points at the break thanks to two goals for the hosts.

John Shanahan scored both the Young Islanders goals as part of a personal first-half total of 2-3 in the South Kerry side leading by 2-8 to 0-8 at the break. The North Kerry side would find the back of the net three times in the second period but could not change the final result as Derry Clancy goaled first and then a Shay Leahy point left just a point between the sides at 2-11 to 2-10.

Shanahan scored 2-7 in total and Jim Lynch a further point in the hosts just edging proceedings by 2-16 to 3-10 as a goal from Moyvane’s Coulson had then relieved at the final whistle.

The other First Round Playoff will be between Ballyduff and Scartaglin takes place this Sunday with the draw for both the 2A (Winners) and 2B (Losers) sections an open one amongst the sides concerned. The winners of 2A are promoted automatically with the losers of 2B eliminated from the process.

Shield

AUSTIN Stacks B have a bye into the semi-finals of this straight knock-out affair with Knocknagoshel playing Tuosist in the other first round encounter this weekend.

Rathmore B won the closest encounter at home to Kilgarvan as they shaded victory over the Kenmare District side by 0-19 to 1-15. A run of seven unanswered points was key to the East Kerry side taking a lead of 0-9 to 0-7 at half-time after Kilgarvan had made the better start.

They were grateful for another run of five points unanswered after Gearóid Fennessy scored a goal for Kilgarvan that had them right in the mix. 0-9 for Chrissy Spiers and 0-7 for Michael A Kelliher made up the bulk of Rathmore’s scoring as goalkeeper Seán O’Riordan impressed in their win.

Patrick O’Shea kicked six points for Kilgarvan, but the Novice Championship Final is now their only hope of county silverware this year.

The other game saw the B sides of Dingle and Kerins O’Rahillys battle it out as Dingle had a sixteen point success thanks to goals from Mikey Boland, Shane O’Rourke, Gavin H Curran and Michael Slattery.

The draw for the semi-finals of this section is also an open one.
