Flying Circus Oceanic Genesis Bryan Adams ‘The sound of four men chopping down the Joshua Tree’ was Bono’s description of The Fly as it heralded a new, more abrasive sound for the band after the global success of their fifth studio album, the mega-selling The Joshua Tree. The Fly was the first single from follow-up album Achtung Baby, widely regarded as not only one of U2’s best albums, but one of the greatest albums of all time. Emerging from recording sessions for Achtung Baby in a rented houses in Dalkey, The Fly became only the band’s second No. 1 in the UK (1988’s ‘Desire’ was the first), and notably ended the record breaking 16-week run at the top for Bryan Adams’ (Everything I Do) I Do It For You. The Fly was also number one in Ireland, Australia, Italy, Norway and New Zealand, but not as well received in the US where it stalled at No 61 in the Billboard Hot 100.
