MARTIN SCANLON RIP: It is with profound sadness that we learned of the death of our Club President, Groundsman & Caretaker Martin Scanlon on Wednesday 31st October. Martin was Emmets Groundsman and Caretaker for twenty five years. He took on the role after being proposed by the late Tim =93The Horse=94 Kennelly and passed at one of the many late night meetings held in Kennelly’s Bar before being ratified at the actual club meeting. Martin took over the position from Anthony Greaney, and Moss Sullivan held the position before that, so he was in good company and took to the role with the best of his ability. Before Martin took on the role the club relied on Eric Browne’s sheep to keep the grass cut so the move was on to get things done and Martin was our man. When Martin took a break earlier this year we only began to notice the amount of work he used to do, it now takes four of us to do what he did at his ease! Martin took immense pride in the pitch and facilities at Frank Sheehy Park, he was king of all he surveyed and was a tremendous help to The Allman’s, Sean, Tadhg, Stephen, Con & the development committee during the various stages of our redevelopment and minded the place as if it was his own child. If anyone had something to say about the place or a bad word you would know about it later! It was always Martin’s way or no way because he knew everything about Frank Sheehy Park and what needed to be done. He kept the club looking its best at all times and for that we are eternally grateful. To Martin’s family his wife Kathleen and son Andy, his grandchildren and great grandchildren we extend our deepest and heartfelt sympathies.

Martin will forever remain in our thoughts and prayers, Solas na bhFlaitheas ar a anam uasal.

Fossa, without the services of David Clifford, still posed a formidable treat. They were first off, the mark with Tadgh O’Shea inside the first minute. The sides were level soon after when Shay Walsh’s free dropped short and midfielder Tom Forde was on hand to punch it over the bar. Both sides were guilty of missed chances early on before Maudie Clifford pointed from play in the 10th minute. Shay Walsh soon had the sides level again from a free before Fossa began to get a grip on the game and stamped their authority on it.

Goals from Tadgh O’Shea & Paudie Clifford began to put daylight between the sides. Credit to Scartaglen they worked tirelessly in the first half and were awarded for their efforts with a goal from Kieran Herlihy following good work by Shay Walsh & Pa Rahilly. Fossa went into the break seven points to the good. Following changes at halftime Scartaglen started the second half brightly Shay Walsh pointing from a free inside the first minute. This was to be as good as it got for the Sliabh Luachra side as Fossa completely dominated the second half. While Scartaglen tried throughout the second half their efforts were not to be rewarded on the scoreboard.

Two quick goals from Fossa’s Paudie Clifford & Donmhaill O’Sullivan vanished any hope of Scartaglen mounting a come back with points from Mathew Rennie, Tadgh O’Shea & Paudie Clifford all contributing to a win for the Killarney side. Scartaglen’s end to the season has not being helped with injuries to a lot of players and over 8 weeks without a competitive game. They will hope to finish the season on a high when they take part in the Bill Tagney Cup Final. Date & Time TBC

Scartaglen scorers: Shay Walsh (0-3f), Kieran Herlihy (1-0), Tom Forde (0-1) high fielding, long range points, key decisions and individual battles but above all a very entertaining game of football played in the right spirit. From Tarbert’s perspective this is a game we should have won but Ballyduff’s ability to hold onto the lead throughout the game was the deciding factor. Tarbert opening score was the only time they led in the game and this was followed by a Ballyduff goal and two points to put Ballyduff up 1-2 to 0-2 after ten minutes. Teams exchanged points again but with fifteen minutes gone Ballyduff got a penalty to go 2-4 to 0-3 with Tarbert looking in severe trouble. With centre back Danny Wren now gaining control a purple patch by Tarbert began and playing some delightful football scored six unanswered points from the boots of Cillian Langan, Ger O’Sullivan, Mark Buckley and Andrew Doherty to reduce the deficit to one point just before half time. However, two vital points by Ballyduff on the stroke of half left the scoreline at 2-6 to 0-9 in favour of Ballyduff. With Mikey Boyle and Shane Enright having a battle royal the second half started in the same vein as the first with teams exchanging points before a Doherty point reduced the deficit to two. Long range point from Danny Wren and Langan reduced deficit again but each time Tarbert came within one point of Ballyduff,

Ballyduff responded with their own scores and led 2-12 to 0-16 entering the final minutes.

Another Doherty point reduced the gap to one with minutes remaining and despite Tarbert’s best efforts they could not get that vital equaliser with Ballyduff winning on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-17. So Tarbert bow out of this year’s championship at the hand of Ballyduff again but can be proud of their display with some outstanding individual performances.

The team and management must now pick themselves up again as next Sunday they take on Firies in a promotion play-off to Division 3. The game throws in at 2pm in Mountcoal and once again your support is vital. Tarbert: Jamie Diggins, Sean Carrig, Shane Enright, Danny O’Connor, Micheal Normile, Danny Wren(0-1), Shane O’Connor, Mark Buckley (0-3), Shea McDonnell, Kevin Enright, Ambrose Lanigan (0-1), Cillian Langan (0-6), Andrew Doherty (0-4), Ger O’Sullivan (0-1), Finbarr Carrig, Subs: Donal Leahy for Carrig, Micheal Carrig for O’Connor, Noel Kennedy for Enright, Brian Heaphy, Sean Holly, Eamon O’Callaghan, Ian Flavin, Gavin Breen.
