One giant leap for Tralee 26.2 Marathon on Neil Armstrong way

- By SINEAD KELLEHER

50 YEARS ago, Neil Armstrong ‘ took a giant leap for mankind’ when he landed on the Moon, and this historic moment is remembered daily at in Tralee following his visit to the town in 1997.

Those taking part in the revamped Tralee 26.2 Marathon this year can now take their own giant leap by signing up for the marathon challenge, and the final mile of their 26.2-mile race will be down the Neil Armstrong Way in Tralee. Its medal has been specially designed to commemorate his historic moon-landing and will be a treasured momento.

The event, which was originally run by Tralee Harriers, has now been handed over to Jim McNeice and his team, who have chosen a new date for the event of Saturday, April 20. Tralee Harriers will run a half marathon, 10k and 5k on March 16.

The 26.2 route this year will also take a step back in time to the town’s very first marathon – taking in Ardfert, Barrow Hill and Fenit, returning by The Kerries and the canal to the Neil Armstrong way.

“We want to thank Tralee Harriers for their support and we look forward to welcoming everyone to this event,” said Jim.

“We have got a great response to returning to this route, and places are selling out.”

Many of those already signed up are from outside the county, so it is expected to be a great event for the town on Easter weekend.

Places are limited to 150, and half are already sold.

Entries are open on the Tralee 26.2 Facebook page. The marathon will also raise funds for the Irish Heart Foundation. Born to Run will be running a training group for the event, following on from the ‘Couch to 5k’ group, to reach half-marathon and full-marathon distance.
