New twist on old tyres is a winner for Mick

-

WEST Kerry artist Mick Davis has won a prestigious award for his work, ‘Le Poete’ (pictured) which is currently on display at the Sculpture in Context exhibition in the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin, Dublin.

Now in its 16th year, Sculpture in Context is Ireland’s largest outdoor sculpture exhibition, featuring the work of well-established and promising up-and-coming artists from Ireland and abroad.

Although Mick is well known for his work as a stone sculptor, he has more recently adopted old tyres as his preferred medium. “I looked at piles of old tyres being discarded and wondered if it would be possible to make sculpture out of them,” said Mick. The experiment has proved a great success and the resulting sculptures have been exhibited in Féile na Bealtaine and as far away as Hamburg.

Mick has three pieces in the Sculpture in Context exhibition, which runs from September 7 to October 20 at the National Botanic Gardens.
