Under 21s make history by claiming the Richie McElligott Cup

PRIDE of place this week goes to the Kerry Under 21 hurlers and the St. Brendan’s and Lady’s Walk club sides who won their respective championship competitions last weekend.

The Kerry Under 21 hurlers defeated Wicklow by 2-12 to 2-8 in the final of the All-Ireland ‘B’ championship at Semple Stadium, Thurles to win their 8th title at this grade. In doing so, Kerry won the Ritchie McElligott Cup (presented in 2015) for the first time and it was fitting that it was a Lixnaw captain, Darragh Shanahan, who received the trophy (and gave an excellent speech as Gaeilge). Well done to all involved, including team manager, Ian Brick (Kilmoyley), coach Fintan O’Connor and selectors DJ Leahy (Causeway), John Lucid (Ballyheigue), Aidan O’Mahony (St. Brendan’s) and Brendan Cummins.

St Brendans, meanwhile, defeated Kilgarvan by 5-17 to 2-15 at Lewis Road, Killarney on Saturday last to win the County Intermediate Hurling Championship title for the first time since 1998.

After the game, Coiste Contae Chiarraí PRO, John O’Leary, presented Corn Antóin Ó Murchú to the winning captain Denis Moriarty. St Brendans corner-forward, Breandán O’Connor was named The Rose Hotel Man of the Match and he will be presented with his award by manager Mark O’Sullivan in the Rose Hotel at a future date.

County Junior Championship Final

LADY’S Walk had a rather easy 3-17 to 0-4 over Duagh in the County Junior Hurling Championship final played at Abbeydorney on Friday last.

After the game, Oifigeach Iomána, Coiste Contae Chiarraí, Gerard McCarthy, presented the trophy to the winning captain Eddie Joy. The Walkers’ midfielder, Chris White, was presented with the Bill Maunsell, Abbeydorney Sports Complex Man of the Match award.

County MHC

THE quarter-finals of the Keane’s County Minor Hurling Championship go ahead over the coming week.

Ballyheigue are at home to St. Brendan’s on Saturday, September 16 at 4pm, and South Kerry v Causeway goes ahead at Kilgarvan on Tuesday, September 19 at 6pm.

On Wednesday, September 20 at 6pm Kilmoyley host Abbeydorney/Tralee Parnells while holders Crotta play Lixnaw.

County SHC

THE 2017 Garvey’s SuperValu Kerry senior hurling championship semi-finals will go ahead on Sunday, September 24 at Austin Stack Park.

St Brendans will play Lixnaw at 2pm followed by Kilmoyley versus Ballyduff at 3.45pm.

The final is scheduled for Sunday, October 8.
