MID KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP, RD 1 Beaufort 2-14 Glenbeigh/Glencar/ Cromane 1-11

BEAUFORT advance to a Mid Kerry minor championship semi-final meeting with Miltown/Castlemaine after accounting for a brave Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane (GGC) challenge in Beaufort last Thursday.

Two lightning-quick starts to both halves ultimately provided the platform for Beaufort to advance. At one stage, halfway through the second half, they enjoyed an eightpoint gap after Jason Hallissey smashed home Beaufort’s second goal to open up a 2-11 to 0-8 lead.

However, GGC didn’t lie down and showed the resolve that recently helped them win a County League Division 5 title, and to qualify for a Central Region final. They fought back and an Ethan Griffin goal accompanied by points from Dara Casey and substitute Ronan Foley cut the gap to four with time almost up.

Beaufort recovered and outstanding midfielder Ciarán Kennedy added a brace of injury time points to seal the six point win. It was the platform of Kennedy and Jonathan Kissane at midfield that paved the way for Beaufort in the first half with the duo involved in all of their side’s good work.

An eighth-minute penalty, converted by Kennedy after the pacey Dylan O’Sullivan was fouled, propelled them into a 1-3 to 0-1. Some fine points from young corner-forward Jack O’Connor kept the momentum going for the home side as they pushed ahead 1-5 to 0-1.

GGC, though finally found their feet (albeit after missing three score-able frees), with Dara Casey causing problems at full-forward. Points from Casey, Griffin (who ended the game with 1-1), and Adrian O’Connor followed as they closed the gap to three, 1-5 to 0-5 after 20 minutes.

Beaufort regained control towards the end of the half and led by 1-8 to 0-7 at the break. They then came storming out of the blocks hitting 0-3 to 0-1 before Hallissey’s goal gave them the comfort they needed to hold off GGC’s late charge and set up the semi-final meeting with Milltown / Castlemaine.
