Sad farewell for iconic ‘Yoko’

-

THE long-established Harp Hotel and Bar of Cahersiveen under the ownership of Tim ‘The Harp’ O’Connell lost one of its faithful and well-loved residents in recent times with the death at the age of 14 years of ‘Yoko’ the jack russell dog.

Yoko will be sadly missed by patrons from his sleeping perch under the seat of the front bar.

He obtained his name as a result of the sinking of a ship off the southwest coast during the Second World War.

The crew, on being rescued, recuperated for a number of days in Cahersiveen.

All were re-patriated except one individual affectionately known as ‘Yoko’ who stayed in the town.

The late Sean ‘The Harp’ O’Connell, father of Tim, owned a dog at the time and aptly named it ‘Yoko’ to the honour of the aforementioned new resident. From then onwards, every dog in the O’Connell household caried the name ‘Yoko‘.

He will be sadly missed by patrons for his indoor barking welcome, and by patrons who regularly fed him morsels of food from the counter.

However.on last Saturday ‘Yoko’ was replaced with another jack russell named what else but ’Yoko.’

The new arrival was introduced to patrons last Saturday and his christening was celebrated by those present with a tipple, lifted glass and a sláinte. Beir bua!
