The Kerryman (South Kerry Edition)
Library fun for children in Summer Stars series
LIBRARIES across Kerry are inviting children to participate in a fantastic adventure that will keep them busy with reading throughout the school summer holidays: the Summer Stars Reading Adventure.
Each year Kerry Library runs summer reading programmes for primary school children to promote literacy development during the holidays, and to encourage readers and not-so-regular readers to engage with books. The 2018 Reading Challenge will run until August 25.
Taking part is easy: just call into to your local library and register.
Each child who registers for the free programme joins in the fun of reading lots of exciting books.
Each child will receive their own Summer Stars reading card to record their progress, and for each book read they will have a Summer Stars Reward Stamp added to their card at the library.
At the end of the programme, all children who have participated will be invited to attend an awards event at their local library.
A series of children’s events will take place across Kerry libraries in conjunction with Summer Stars.
There are Dogs Trust workshops on ‘How to look after your pet’.
Another workshop, titled ‘Breakout EDU’, will introduce participants to methods of critical. This will take place in Castleisland and Tralee libraries.
A series of workshops ‘From page to green screen’ involving film-making and special effects at Caherciveen and Killarney libraries is also scheduled, as well as ‘Balloon Blasts’ workshops in Killorglin and Listowel libraries.
This will involve balloons races, creating balloon-powered cars and even balloon jousting.
An interactive website is also available, where participants can play related, themed games, review books and communicate with selected authors.
Through these fun events Kerry Library hopes to continue the promotion of books and libraries as an enjoyable and rewarding free activity during the school holidays.
All Kerry Library branches are open throughout the summer, including all day on Saturdays.
The Kerry Summer Stars Reading Challenge was launched by Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Cllr Norma Foley on Friday at Castleisland Library.
