THIS is a char­ity aimed at re­duc­ing food waste and al­le­vi­at­ing food poverty. Estab­lished over three years ago, it has earned a solid rep­u­ta­tion for its work which func­tions as a food­bank that col­lects and dis­trib­utes food to peo­ple in need. Vol­un­teers play a key role in the over­all plan to al­le­vi­ate food waste. The vol­un­teers and staff are re­spon­si­ble for col­lec­tion, pack­ag­ing, and de­liv­ery of food. More­over, the cre­ation of in­di­vid­ual food parcels are dis­trib­uted di­rectly to fam­i­lies. Since its in­cep­tion, Food­share Kerry has re­duced over 15 tonnes of food waste and sur­plus from land­falls. Ad­di­tion­ally, it has dis­trib­uted over 94 tonnes of food to over 32 com­mu­nity groups and 5,000 fam­i­lies ex­pe­ri­enc­ing food poverty all over Kerry. It has grown from a vol­un­teer led com­mu­nity group to a reg­is­tered Char­ity and CSP with full-time staff. It has in­creased its spread from 11 com­mu­nity part­ners in 2015 to over 32 com­mu­nity part­ners in 2018. It is cur­rently in the process of fi­nal­is­ing a ‘So­cial Su­per­mar­ket’ which will cre­ate a sus­tain­able so­lu­tion to the prob­lem of food waste and food poverty. In ad­di­tion, it runs aware­ness cam­paigns and training pro­grammes to em­power in­di­vid­u­als and food busi­nesses to play their part in the al­le­vi­a­tion of food waste and food poverty.
