THIS is a charity aimed at reducing food waste and alleviating food poverty. Established over three years ago, it has earned a solid reputation for its work which functions as a foodbank that collects and distributes food to people in need. Volunteers play a key role in the overall plan to alleviate food waste. The volunteers and staff are responsible for collection, packaging, and delivery of food. Moreover, the creation of individual food parcels are distributed directly to families. Since its inception, Foodshare Kerry has reduced over 15 tonnes of food waste and surplus from landfalls. Additionally, it has distributed over 94 tonnes of food to over 32 community groups and 5,000 families experiencing food poverty all over Kerry. It has grown from a volunteer led community group to a registered Charity and CSP with full-time staff. It has increased its spread from 11 community partners in 2015 to over 32 community partners in 2018. It is currently in the process of finalising a ‘Social Supermarket’ which will create a sustainable solution to the problem of food waste and food poverty. In addition, it runs awareness campaigns and training programmes to empower individuals and food businesses to play their part in the alleviation of food waste and food poverty.
