O’Keeffe strike seals title for Gneeveguilla

TATLER JACK MINOR B FINAL Gneeveguilla 1-7 Killarney Legion 0-7

THIS East Kerry Minor final sponsored by The Tatler Jack, was a good sporting encounter, played under lights in Currans – the Kerry GAA Centre of Excellence on Wednesday last.

Scores were very hard to come by in the first half, two Evan Cronin frees and a point from Midfielder Daniel Fleming saw the Sluabh Luachra side lead at the break. Legion’s points came from the boot of Ryan O’Grady, both frees. Halftime score: Gneeveguilla 0-3 Killarney Legion 0-2.

Killarney Legion started the second half brightly, kicking three points, one free each from Ryan O’Grady and Jack Enright and a fine long range point from play from Ryan O’Grady.

Evan Cronin again steadied things for Gneeveguilla by pointing a free. Then Gneeveguilla’s Seán O’Keeffe took the game by storm. On the forty sixth minute he collected the ball, turned smartly and went on a strong run before finishing a great goal to the Legion net.

The same player followed up with a fine point from play. The town side now went on the offensive and put two points on the board from Ryan O’Grady from distance and Jack Enright, reducing the gap to the minimum.

Robert Osborne in the Legion goal then made a fine save to keep Gneeveguilla at bay. However, it was to be Gneeveguilla’s night and they finished the stronger. Evan Cronin then added a pointed free.

Seán O’Keeffe had the final say when again, he found himself in on goal, but this time he chose to take a point to widen the margin to three points, a mature decision from a young player.

East Kerry Chairman Johnny Brosnan presented the Tim McGillicuddy Cup to Gneeveguilla Captain Cathal Collins. Cathal went on to pay a nice tribute to Niall McGillicuddy RIP of Killarney Legion who passed away recently, before his time.
