Cllr Cronin (Independent), from Ballyhar, is a former Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District and has represented the Killarney Electoral Area since 1999.
He took the reins at the annual AGM at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. He was expected to take the position given the electoral agreement made following the local elections.
