DANGLING ON THE BRINK
A YOUNG Taiwanese couple emerged uninjured and smiling after a frightening incident left their car dangling on the edge of one of the county’s most famous viewing areas.
Ladies View Café’s Raymond O’Shea was working on the rooftop of the building at around 12.20pm on Friday afternoon when a bang drew his attention to the small car park across from the building.
“I heard the bang because they hit the small wall along the edge of the car park,” Raymond told The Kerryman. “Next thing, he [the driver] started revving the engine, but instead of reversing, the car went forward and over the wall. Everyone looking was frozen to the spot, and in that second I was praying the car would come to a stop – and thankfully it did after it hit a rock down from the wall.”
Raymond said he got down from the roof and made his way towards the black Renault. But as everyone in the area was approaching the dangling car to aid the couple, the passenger and driver doors swung open, and a man and woman, both aged in their 20s, clambered out.
“The drop isn’t that sheer, but the car could have somersaulted down the hill, and it could have been far more serious; it could have been tragic” Raymond said.
“We brought them into the café for a good hot drink, but they definitely saw a funny side to what happened. They were uninjured, and they were smiling away. Once they were okay, that was the main thing.
“They got in contact with the car rental company to sort out a replacement vehicle, and the their old car was towed away at around 4pm. They weren’t sure how they were going to get on to Dingle [the next destination on their holiday] but a lady very kindly brought them to Killarney and sorted them out for a place to stay.”
“The following day, the Taiwanese Embassy called the café, having heard the story, and they thanked all those who had helped. The couple themselves phoned us also the day after to thank us once again,” Raymond said.
“They were in good spirits. I think they were going from Dingle and on to Galway, so they didn’t let it ruin their holiday.”
