Gaelcholáiste debaters are on the road again this week

The Kerryman (Tralee Edition) - - COMMUNITY NEWS - By CIARÁN O’DONOGHUE (T.Y STUDENT)

Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí’s senior debating team will travel to Balleyvourney in Cork this week for the second round of the ‘Cómortas Díospóireachta Uí Chadhain that is organised by Gael Linn. The team is made up of three transition year students, Ciarán Ó’Donnchú, Seán Ó’Loingsigh and Aindriú Ó’Muimhneacháin and are mentored by Bean Michelle D’Áltúin. Last month we progressed from the first round held at our school, debating the topical motion that Amateurism is a myth in the G.A.A.

For this debate the teams have been given the intriguing motion that Donald Trumps Twitter account should be banned. Trump is one of the most divisive American Presidents ever and this motion will be keenly contested by all four teams. We are debating in favour of the motion and hopefully we will progress to regional finals which will be held next month.

This marks the start of a busy period coming up for Transition year. This is the first of three trips to Cork, as a group of us will be heading to the Model United Nations in U.C.C before competing in Scléip which is a talent competition for Irish Speaking Secondary Schools.

On behalf of myself and the whole of transition year I would like to thank Bean D’Áltúin for all the work she does, as she has organises everything for us throughout the year.

Also she has spent numerous hours of her own time writing drama’s and researching debates and she provides us with the chance to get the most we can out of Transition Year.

It’s certainly a busy period coming up and hopefully we will start it with a victory in our debate on Thursday!
