KCC review of Mall’s no car policy
PUBLIC AND BUSINESSES ASKED FOR FEEDBACK ON PEDESTRIANISATION
AS the anniversary of the refurbished Mall’s official opening approaches Kerry County Council (KCC) have commenced its promised review of traffic arrangements on the street.
Since December 2017 The Mall has been closed to all traffic from 10.30am to 6pm daily.
While the pedestrianisation has proved popular – and was supported by a majority ahead of its introduction – it has not been universally welcomed with several town centre businesses and many taxi drivers opposed to the new arrangements.
When the Tralee Municipal District council at Kerry County Council voted to approve the Mall’s pedestrianisation it was on condition that the decision be reviewed after nine months.
That process has now officially started and the local authority are now inviting submissions from members of the public and traders as part of an ‘informal’ consultation process.
“At the time the pedestrianisation was introduced KCC committed to reviewing the matter after nine months and to invite feedback from the community on how the system was working. We are now encouraging everyone, businesses and the general public, to have their say on how well the pedestrianisation is operating,” said a KCC spokesperson.
Mayor of Tralee Cllr Graham Spring (Lab) is encouraging as many people as possible to take part and giver their opinions on the success or otherwise of the new traffic system.
“When we voted last November to introduce the current system of pedestrianisation on the Mall, we made a firm commitment to review it after nine months to assess the impact on motorists, pedestrians, shoppers and businesses. Now we would like to hear what the people of Tralee and further afield think,” Said Mayor Spring.
“This is an informal consultation with the public but I hope that people will engage with it before we decide on the future pedestrianisation system which might apply in The Mall,” he said.
Anyone with a submission, comment or observation should e-mail email@example.com using ‘The Mall’ in the message line or write to the Tralee Municipal District Officer, Tralee Municipal District, Princes’ Quay, Tralee before the deadline of Friday, September 28.
