Chamber Alliance asking you to vote with your butts

The Kerryman (Tralee Edition) - - NEWS - By SIMON BROUDER

TRALEE Chamber Alliance have come up with a novel way to encourage smokers to dispose of their cigarette butts properly.

A quirky new bin for cigarette butts has just been installed on The Mall and now smokers will be able to help settle a debate when they throw away their butts.

The bin will display a topical question with two possible answers and smokers vote by dropping their cigarette butt into the slot underneath their preferred answer.

Over time, the butts will pile up in the bin (not the street) showing which answer is the most popular.

For example the first question posed on the bin was ‘Who do you want as our next President? Michael D or Someone else.’

Based on the Tralee’s smokers’ butt based feedback it would appear Michael D is the people’s choice for another stint in the Áras.

“The bin uses the ‘nudge’ theory behaviour change approach and are a fun way to get people engaged in putting cigarette butts in a bin,” said Tralee Chamber Alliance spokesperson John Drummey.

The questions on the bins will be changed regularly and will be a mixture of humorous and topical questions.

TCA’s Environmental Task Force and the Tralee Glan Initiative are responsible for the initiative.
