Grif­fin and Healy Rae at war over bud­get VAT hike

THE fall­out from the bud­get VAT hike has prompted fe­ro­cious a war of words be­tween Ju­nior Min­is­ter for Tourism Bren­dan Grif­fin and In­de­pen­dent TD Michael Healy Rae.

The Kerry TDs bat­tle be­gan when Deputy Healy-Rae is­sued a state­ment on Tues­day in which he said it seemed Min­is­ter Grif­fin didn’t make much of an ef­fort to save the spe­cial nine per cent VAT rate for tourism.

Deputy Healy-Rae’s com­ments pro­voked an un­com­pro­mis­ing re­sponse from Min­is­ter Grif­fin who – in a state­ment to The Ker­ry­man – la­belled the Deputy Healy-Rae as an “ab­sen­tee hyp­o­crit­i­cal pop­ulist,”.
