Expressive Play & Therapy Centre
EXPRESSIVE Play in Kilflynn is a centre committed to implementing a multitude of services for children. This is achieved through a range of specialised one to one strategies that includes child and adolescent psychotherapy, play therapy, parenting support, course facilitation & training, children’s workshops and adult education.
Run by Edel Lawlor, she is a qualified Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist. Edel is an extremely motivated individual with an ability to encourage staff and volunteers alike. By helping them to recognise the importance of their role in supporting children and families, Edel creates the perfect atmosphere in her centre that is conducive to working with and helping children.
The knock on effect of this impacts on what Expressive Play aims to achieve as a service. Edel’s own children are also a key part of the family business and have grown up with her through each phase of its development. This has helped to build a more successful and empathetic business with her eldest daughter, Clodagh, now training to be a play therapist, while daughter, Brogan, has just started her studies in Social Care. Edel’s youngest daughter also helps out at the centre.
This business is unique in Kerry as it provides a multitude of services which, when coupled with Edel’s extensive knowledge and experience with children from all walks of life, helps to create a better environment for healing extensive trauma. Edel is an extremely determined and ambitious woman when it comes to her work. In 2016 she self-organised the visit of Dr Bruce Perry to Tralee for a conference which was attended by interested parties nationwide. Dr Perry is one of the world’s foremost experts in child therapy and trauma, and Edel applies many of his techniques in her own work.
The Expressive Play Centre also receives referrals from courts, social workers, schools, mental health services, doctors, solicitors and family resource centres who recognise the value and key work that Edel and the Expressive Play team provide. Edel has developed a solid reputation for her work over the years and is trusted among many leading professionals for her creativity and expertise.
Edel has also travelled around Ireland delivering specialised workshops and helping therapists set up their own business. Expressive Play has started out as a local initiative but has very much branched out to become a nationally recognised one.
