‘Little Menace’ Christopher set for very own Beano appearance
EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Christopher Lynch will be the envy of all his classmates in the near future after it was confirmed that he will feature in his very own one-off comic strip in ‘The Beano’.
The Muire Gan Smál pupil will feature in the famous comic book as a ‘Little Menace’ and will even have a comic book character drawn in his own likeness by the comic’s artists.
Christopher, who has Autism, has been described by his mother Lisa as somewhat of a “super fan” of the comic book in recent months. The iconic publication, Lisa says, has been a great help to Christopher in understanding and developing social cues.
“The way that the comic is drawn and the language is so simple, he has recognised an awful lot of social cues from it. Things like facial expressions, what angry looks like, that if you do this to someone they are going to be mad, if you do this to someone, they will be upset. All of this has really helped him,” said Lisa, speaking to The Kerryman.
“A big thing with Christopher as well is that he struggles with openers to talk to people. The Beano do jokes along the ends of their pages and Christopher has now learnt from this that if he tells people these jokes, it gets a good reaction and that it can an ice-breaker for him,” she continued.
After seeing the positive effect that the comic was having on her son, Lisa decided, on a whim, to email the comic book’s fan club and see if they could maybe send out a letter to Christopher thanking him for reading.
Their response, the offer of his own comic book strip at the back of a future edition, was something that she could never have expected.
“They have gone above and beyond for him. He would have been delighted with just a letter from them but for them to do this, it’s just so heart-warming,” she said.
“Thursday is Beano day in our house and he has started reminding me every Wednesday morning that it’s out the next day. He has me warned,” she laughed.
In addition to his appearance in the comic, the artists will be sending over all of the original artwork for the edition as well which Lisa said she plans to frame and put on the wall.
“This is something that he’ll be able to look back on in years to come. I don’t think it has sunk in yet for him. It’s such an amazing thing they are doing,” she finished.
Eight-year-old Christopher Lynch from Tralee will be featured as a ‘Little Menace’ in his very own comic strip in an edition of The Beano over the next few months.
