County Council grant permission for new mountain bike trail
THERE was further good news for Coolaney and indeed Sligo last week as Sligo County Council granted planning permission to Coillte for the development of the mountain bike trail.
The proposed development consists of 80km of bike trails including boundary treatments, signage and all associated works.
The proposed development also includes a new building containing changing and washing facilities, a cafe, bicycle hire facilities, the construction of parking areas, a bike wash, the installation of a waste water treatment plant and percolation area and all associated works.
This is a welcome development for the Coolaney Development Company and those who have been involved in this project from the start.
“It’s huge for us,” said Gavin Laws, of Coolaney Development Company.
Work will begin on the project with funding already secured.
“We have about €1million in funding. So with that we have plans to develop 15km of single track trails, the car park, roads leafing up to it and the signage.
“It will be a bit of a slow burner until we get all the money together for the 80km and the building but we are getting there.
“We probably need around €4 million or €5 million altogether so that might take a while.
“We want to do it on a phase basis anyway,” he added.
Councillor Dara Mulvey welcomed the news, and said this is a big step forward for the project.
“This is another positive step forward in bringing a flagship project the only one of its kind in Connaught.”
