A young man with mental health issues has been remanded in custody at Cloverhill Prison while he waits for a bed to become free at the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin.

Sligo District Court was told that 27-year-old Philip Lyons of Kestrel Drive, Kevinsfort, was certified as too ill to travel to court last week.

He’s charged with three counts of assault at the Sligo/Leitrim Mental Health Services at Clarion Road on September 20 th 2016, July 27 th and July 6 th last.

Mr Donal McGuinness BL for the HSE attended court, accompanied by three staff members from the Mental Health unit in Sligo. He told Judge Kevin Kilrane that Lyons was “top of the list” for a transfer to the Central Mental Hospital and once a bed was free, the Governor of Cloverhill would make an order for his transfer.

Judge Kilrane remanded Lyons in custody to Sligo District Court to 12 th of October but excused him from attending.
