Prisoner has meat cleaver charge dropped
A man has claimed a meat cleaver found in his car in Stephen’s Street Car Park was borrowed from his mother for chopping groceries he had just bought.
David Moran (28) of Calry Court, Stephen Street, pleaded guilty to the possession of knives in his car outside his home on 5 th December 2016.
The court heard Moran is currently serving a five and a half year prison sentence and is due to be released March 2021.
Inspector Paul Kilcoyne said that Gardaí stopped and searched Moran’s car that day and found a meat cleaver in the door of his car. At the time, Moran said it was for “chopping herbs.”
In court last week, Moran said he had just bought steak and borrowed the cleaver off his mother to cut it up.
“If I was going to use it for a weapon I wouldn’t use a meat cleaver,” he added.
“Your honour he’s telling the truth,” said a woman in the courtroom.
Judge Kilrane said a conviction was “not going to alter things hugely” and struck it out.
