Medieval house in disrepair
A merchant house on High Street dating back to Cromwellian times is in a “serious state of disrepair.”
The property at No.’s 16 and 17 High Street is considered one of the oldest roofed buildings in Sligo, dating back to the 17 th century.
It’s been protected since 2004 and is on its fourth owner since then.
Cllr Declan Bree raised concern about the condition of the roof at the meeting.
Council official Frank Moylan said that while some works were undertaken by the owner to stabilise the structure, the buildings were in serious disrepair.
He pointed out that there was a duty on the owner to protect the buildings.
He said the current owner would be contacted to inform him of these responsibilities and to request proposals to ensure that the necessary works to prolong the life of these buildings was carried out.
Cllr Bree said they had “historical significance.”
