-

A man has admitted speeding at 163kph on the N59 in a bid to get home in time to watch the Late Late Toy Show with his children.

Patrick Esler (49) of Farrellmacfarrell, Dromore West, Sligo, was clocked driving at 163kph in a 100kph speed limit zone at Grangebeg, Skreen, Sligo by Gardaí on 27 th November 2015.

When they asked him why he was speeding, Esler told Gardaí it was the night of the Late Late Toy Show.

He was charged with Dangerous Driving but defence solicitor Mr Gerard McGovern told Judge Kevin Kilrane that he would plead guilty to a lesser charge of Careless Driving if the judge was agreeable.

He said Esler drove for a living and needed his licence. “He had been driving for five hours and realised it was late - he had promised his children he’d be home to see the Late Late,” said Mr McGovern.

Judge Kilrane agreed to convict Esler of Careless Driving and fined him ¤200.
