Man fined ¤800 for ‘nasty’ bag theft

A man who stole a woman’s handbag and phone from her car at Cashel, Cloonloo on 11 th March 2016 has avoided a six month prison sentence.

Jason Maughan (25) of Barr na Trimoige, Kilkelly, brought ¤500 to court for the victim Ms Janet Fuller after he was ordered to do so on 22nd February last if he wanted to avoid going to prison.

Mr Gerard McGovern, defence solicitor, agreed to ensure the victim got the money.

“You were the driver of the car with your brother who stopped in Cloonloo and stole the handbag,” said Judge Kilrane. “It’s a nasty offence and you’re equally guilty,” he said.

He said Maughan’s denials were “unrealistic” and fined him a further ¤300.
