Rail Trail has “huge” potential
COUNCILLOR Tom MacSharry has urged the Council to support the Sligo to Enniskillen Greenway in conjunction with the other Local Authorities and secure funding from the Government for the project.
The proposed Rail Trail would convert the disused railway route between Collooney and Enniskillen into a multi-use Rail Trail for cyclists, walkers and the mobility challenged.
It would start at Collooney and pass through Ballintogher, Dromahair, Glenfarne, Blacklion and Enniskillen.
“The potential for tourism for Sligo is absolutely huge. I want and hope to get cross party support for this,” said Cllr MacSharry. “The Greenway in Mayo had 200,000 visitors and brought in millions of euro locally,” he said. He was supported by Cllr Rosaleen O’Grady. Cllr Marie Casserly said she had “practically the same motion in January” and met with Minister Shane Ross who was looking forward to receiving an application about it.
Cllrs Hubert Keaney, Seamus Kilgannon, Declan Bree, Michael Clarke and Thomas Healy supported the motion. Chief Executive Ciarán Hayes said “political support would be welcomed.”
