Hubert declares his intentions

Former Mayor and Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council Cllr. Hubert Keaney has put his name forward in the race to become Fine Gael’s next TD in the forthcoming general election.

He told The Sligo Champion that the decision is one he had taken three years ago and it should come as no surprise that he is throwing his hat in the ring. He says: “I’ve been a councillor now since 2009 and I believe I have done a good job. I now want to represent this area at national level and I think it is important that we send someone who knows the strengths and weaknesses of this area.” Hubert who lives in Rathcormac is confident of support but admits ‘it’s a crowded field.’

“There are some bigger branches in other areas, not so much in my area but on the night we will be all making a presentation to delegates and hopefully I will do enough to convince them.

“I have support in North Sligo, I’m from North Leitrim originally and I have contacts around Sligo town. The timing of this convention has taken us all by surprise because of the resignation of Tony McLoughlin. A vacant seat makes putting your name forward easier,” he concludes.
