Locals bring the campaign world wide with signs

LOCALS from Enniscrone who are determined to decide once and for all how its name is spelled have brought their campaign world-wide.

Whilst on holiday in farflung destinations this year, from New York City to Milan to Ben Nevis in Scotland, Enniscrone natives have brought along signage to promote the correct spelling of their town.

Photos of the holiday makers with the signage at iconic landmarks around the globe have been taken and uploaded online.

Former newsagent in the town Tony Connaughton who ran his shop for 23 years says that the re-naming of Enniscrone is more important now than ever before.

“During the troubles, we had so many repeat visitors from the North,” he recalls, “I remember long hot summers when I kept the shop open until midnight. Repeat visitors know where they are going.

“Now, with the Wild Atlantic Way and helped by the two big hotels in the town we are get- ting new tourists every year. I find it more relevant now.”

The Irish spelling of Enniscrone has to change too, according to Muredach Tuffy of the Enniscrone Placenames Committee.

He says: “We don’t recognise the current spelling. We were taught and still teach ‘Inis Eiscir Abhann’ at both national and secondary level.”

And if the name changes, Solicitor Sinead Durkin says: “It will be a major achievement for the committee and the area as a whole.”
