House plan on listed site

Wexford People - - NEWS -

A site which contains an underground enclosure recorded as a national monument, is at the centre of a planning application to Wexford County Council.

Alice Bell is seeking permission to build a house and waste water treatment system on the site at Rathjarney in Piercestown.

The area is close to a pre-Christian enclosure listed under Section 12 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1994.

The land is owned by Frederick and Elizabeth Bell who have given permission to their daughter to apply for planning permission.

Enclosures are early archaeological sites which are separated from surrounding land by earthworks, walls or fencing.

They indicate settlement areas, defences or burial grounds.
