Vols and St. Martin’s progress to U-16 semi-finals ROUND-UP

-

BIG wins for St Martin’s and Volunteers moved both clubs into the semi-final of the Gorey Guardian Under-16 Premier Football championship last week. The Piercestown based side proved too strong for Castletown and will meet Starlights in the last four while the John Street boys dismissed Shelmaliers and will now face Naomh Eanna.

St Joseph’s pulled off an impressive victory over Ferns in the Roinn 1 quarter-finals and their reward for that success is a last four meeting with HWH-Bunclody, winners against St Anne’s. St Mary’s, Maudlintown have been in superb form of late and that continued as they brushed Cushinstown aside to book a semi-final meeting with Horeswood, victorious over Slaney Gaels.

There were more goals than points scored when Blackwater met Moguegeen Gaels in the Roinn 1 shield quarters but the over-the-water side won’t care after they booked a last four meeting with Gusserane. In the other semi-final Cloughbawn, winners over Taghmon-Camross, will face off against Our Lady’s Island/St Fintan’s.

The closest game in the Roinn 2 semi-finals came in Craanford where St James’ edged past the hosts 4-13 to 2-13. They will meet Crossabeg-Ballymurn in the last four after they eased past the Buffers Alley challenge. In the other semi, Ballyhogue, victors over St Patrick’s, will take on Davidstown-Courtnacuddy.

St Martin’s victory over Sarsfields in the delayed Wexford People Premier Minor Football Championship means they finished third in the group and will face Dunbrody Gaels in the quarters. Starlights and Naomh Eanna will meet in the other tie with the winners going into the semi-finals with the waiting Glynn-Barntown and HWH-Bunclody.

Roinn 1 is further delayed after Volunteers, Gusserane and Oylegate-Glenbrien all finished level on points meaning a playoff is necessary.

In the Roinn 2 semi-finals, St Joseph’s caused a big upset with a 4-7 to 0-17 victory over favourites Davidstown-Courtnacuddy. They will meet Ferns in the final after they beat Fr. Murphy’s in their last four match.

Naomh Eanna won their replayed game against Starlights in the New Ross Standard Under-14 Division 1 football championship and will now meet Sarsfields in the final in the coming weeks.

In the Shield HWH-Bunclody had a strong victory at home to Our Lady’s Island/St Fintan’s and they will face St Martin’s in the decider.

Fethard won their local derby with Horeswood in Division 2 and they will meet Buffers Alley in the title decider.

Oylegate powered past Kilrush in the Division 3 semi-final and are still on course for a hurling/football double. In the big ball final they will meet Ballyhogue.

St Mary’s, Maudlintown edged past Ferns in Division 4 and will face Davidstown in the decided while in Division 5 Taghmon-Camross were goal happy against St Mary’s, Rosslare and they will play either Duffry Rovers or Cloughbawn.

Just a note on two teams to finish. Realt na Mara in the Division 5 football shield, and Marshalstown-Castledockrell in the Division 4 hurling shield, have both claimed the plaque despite not playing.

Unfortunately their potential opponents have all withdrew to leave both sides alone in those respective competitions.
