Four in running for camogie All Stars

-

THE NUMBER of Wexford players in contention for All Star honours rose from four to eight last week when the camogie shortlist was released. It marked the start of a great few days for young St. Martin’s duo Sarah O’Connor and Chloe Foxe as they followed up the good news with a first-ever county Senior title over the weekend.

O’Connor, who was also nominated last year, is one of nine players in contention for a place in the full-back line, while Foxe has a similar number to contend with in the full-forward sector.

This year’s captain, Bríd Gordon from Blackwater, is is the running for a half-back slot, while the list of half-forward nominees includes Shelley Kehoe from Oulart-The Ballagh.

All-Ireland champions Cork have eleven players shortlisted, followed by Kilkenny (nine), Dublin (seven), Galway (six), Clare (five), Wexford (four), Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford (one each).

The team will be announced at the 14th All Star awards banquet in the Citywest Hotel on Saturday, November 4.

The four camogie players join hurlers Diarmuid O’Keeffe, Matthew O’Hanlon, Lee Chin and Conor McDonald who are all in the running for hurling awards.

And let’s not forget that the county already had three players selected on the All Star rounders team. Emma Reddy, Ann Hanley and Kate Duggan crowned a great year as their club, Glynn-Barntown, retained its All-Ireland title before the individual awards were presented.
