Mythen to contest election for Sinn Fein

- By ESTHER HAYDEN

CLLR Johnny Mythen will be Sinn Fein’s candidate in the next General Election.

The party held its general election convention in Ferns recently in front of a large crowd which included Sinn Fein vice-president Mary Lou McDonald and MEP for Ireland South Liadh Ni Riada.

Cllr Mythen was unanimously selected by all Sinn Fein Cumann’s in Wexford to contest the next general election for the party.

Speaking afterwards Cllr Mythen said: ‘I am very humbled but also very proud to accept the nomination. We were very unlucky not to take a seat on the last occasion with a mere 31 votes separating myself and Paul Kehoe. I believe the next time round we can take a seat in County Wexford.

‘The party support is growing at a good steady rate and we are in the process of acquiring a full time office in Enniscorthy. We also have a strategic election plan in place so things are looking bright for the future.’

Cllr Mythen said the party’s reasoning behind holding a convention so early was simple.

‘We believe a general election can be called at any moment because the current Government’s position is a volatile one. They are relying on a motley crew of independents and are subject to a confidence and supply deal that requires a nod from Fianna Fail on every piece of legislation passed.

‘A good example of this was the election of two Fine Gael Taoisigh supported by a party claiming to be the main opposition.’

Channelling the words of Benjamin Franklin Cllr Mythen said: ‘if you fail to plan then you plan to fail’.
