QUAY CASINO RAIDED

- By DAVID TUCKER

WEXFORD gardaí and customs officers carried out a raid on a popular casino in the town centre early on Sunday morning, seizing a large amount of alcohol.

The Quay Casino, in Monck Street, was searched by the uniformed officers during the raid, which began at 2.15 a.m. and went on for some time. At least 15 officers were said to have been involved in the operation. ‘A large amount of alcohol and some cigarettes were seized,’ said Inspector Denis Whelan.

Inspector Whelan said the garda raid and the seizures were carried out in relation the Intoxicating Liquor Act, 1962, while the Customs involvement was in relation to a Revenue investigation.

Inspector Whelan said more than 20 cases of beer and a dozen bottles of vodka, as well as other spirits, was among the large amount of alcohol seized at the Monck Street premises and investigations ‘are ongoing’.

He said gardai had acted after a warrant was issued by Wexford District Court.

‘There were no arrests and a file will be sent to the DPP,’ he said.

The Quay Casino describes itself as ‘the only proper casino in Wexford town.. this is a member’s club and membership costs €25. In exchange for the membership fee, each member gets €25 chips to bet with and complimentary drinks while they are playing.’

There are three roulette wheels, three blackjack tables and various poker tables. There is also a smoking area and a private room for poker tournaments. The phone number listed for the casino was ‘not in service’ yesterday (Monday).
