ROD (62) WAS A MAN OF SIMPLE TASTES

-

THE SAD passing of Roderick (Rod) O’Driscoll, occurred on February 27 in Galway.

Rod was the song of Dr Diarmuid and Frances O’Driscoll from Crosstown. He passed away suddenly in Oranmore, Galway, at the age of 62.

Born on May 25, 1955, he lived in Wexford much of his earlier life before moving to Galway. After attending Clongowes Wood College and St Peter’s College he studied hotel management in Shannon. His hotel career took him to a variety of places including Switzerland and the UK.

In August 1984 he married Louise Kennedy from Waterford.

Rod was an active member of Wexford Wanderers Rugby Club and Wexford Harbour Boat Club where he learned how to sail and partnered with his brother Fergal in the Mirror fleet. Last year he attended a reunion with his buddies there from the 1960s and 1970s. In addition to playing rugby in his younger years with Wanderers, he was involved in coaching, refereeing and womens’ rugby for many years with Galwegians in Galway.

Rod spent a lot of time on the road between Galway and Wexford for regular catch-ups with his parents, Frankie and Diarmuid, and his sisters Susan Stafford and Rosemary Spelman.

He had simple tastes and was very active: he had his boat; he enjoyed his run and daily swim, as well as walking his dog, Curly.

Rod will be deeply missed by his daughters, Aoife, Susanne, Laura; their mum, Louise; his mum and dad, Frankie and Diarmuid; his seven siblings, Peter, Susan, Diarmuid, Rosemary, Fergal, Mary-Louise and Conor, and their spouses and children.
