Second cruise for Gorey

- DEAN GOODISON Group A in Ferns COE

IT WAS another cruise for Naomh Eanna as they took the battle of the towns with consummate ease in the Joyces Expert Intermediate ‘A’ football championship at the Ferns Centre of Excellence on Saturday.

After completely dominating the aerial battle in their Group A opener one week earlier, Gorey got a little more competition in that department from Geraldine O’Hanrahans but otherwise they ruled the roost all over the park to win going away.

With discussion rife around Wexford on county hurlers who aren’t playing big ball with their clubs, it was fitting that one of Davy Fitzgerald’s men, Conor McDonald, looked to really enjoy the runaround for Naomh Eanna with a personal tally of 1-5.

Eight different players registered for Gorey and, considering they only used 15, that stat is even more impressive. Lee Kinsella got them going with a couple of early points, while Seán Doyle scored a brace as they moved 0-7 to 0-2 ahead at the end of the opening quarter.

There was no let-up from the men in green as the half wore on. David O’Brien brought his firsthalf tally to four, McDonald had three points, and New Ross failed to score after the 14th minute as Naomh Eanna took a 0-14 to 0-2 lead in at the break.

Eoin Molloy provided a statement of intent with a fine score soon after the resumption before Lee Kinsella netted for the second game running from Conor McDonald’s feed to make it 1-16 to 0-2 in the 35th minute.

McDonald shot wide when Kinsella looked to repay the favour moments later, but Gorey still ended the third quarter with a 1-19 to 0-2 lead. Diarmuid Kehoe registered his side’s first score for 31 minutes at the midpoint of the second-half.

A Charlie McGuckin screamer from the left, 20 metres out, pushed Naomh Eanna further ahead. In fairness to Ross, they battled away and got goals back from Dylan Egan and Shane Roche, but McDonald had the final say with the goal his performance deserved in the 59th minute.
