A&E ‘end of life’ room in memory of Abbie

- By ANNA HAYES

A NEW ‘End of Life’ room has been opened at the Emergency Department of Wexford General Hospital in memory of a young girl who passed away two years ago.

Bridgetown Vocational College student Abbie Troy (15) passed away from an illness in February 2016. Tragically, the Troy family also bid farewell to Abbie’s father Tom in May of last year.

During their time in the hospital with Abbie, the family found that there was no private space for them to be together and they felt that it was something that was needed. The current room was available in the hospital but had not been fully furnished or decorated, and the decision was made to fundraise towards doing this.

The family held a variety of events over the course of 2017 including Abbie’s Fundraiser Ball which took place in the Riverbank House Hotel. Other businesses and individuals, such as Quigley’s Bar, Coast Kilmore and Amy Burton held their own fundraisers as part of the campaign.

In December, the family handed over a cheque for €23,500 to staff and management at the Emergency Department.

Unit Manager Rajess Tirbhowan said that the staff and management at Wexford General Hospital wished to thank the Troy family for their generous donation and their hard work, saying they had come to the hospital staff after Abbie’s passing, having noticed the lack of a private space for families. He explained that the hospital had designed the space, with the assistance of an interior decorator.
