Sailors aim­ing for gold in China and Por­tu­gal

A NUM­BER of ju­nior and adult sailors are gear­ing up for a busy sum­mer on the wa­ter, with three of the group trav­el­ling abroad to rep­re­sent Ire­land.

Ju­nior sailors, all of whom are mem­bers of Wex­ford Har­bour Boat and Ten­nis Club, will travel as far as China and Por­tu­gal for events while oth­ers will take part in na­tional com­pe­ti­tions around Ire­land.

Ciaran Ryan, from Crossabeg, is com­pet­ing in a num­ber of events in­clud­ing the Top­per Na­tion­als which take place at Wex­ford Boat Club on July 6, 7 and 8.

Ciaran then trav­els to China for the Top­per World Cham­pi­onship in Au­gust. He qual­i­fied for grant sup­port for the com­pe­ti­tion fol­low­ing his per­for­mance at the 2017 World Cham­pi­onships in France.

It will be Ciaran’s third and fi­nal world cham­pi­onships in the Top­per Class. He hopes to do well and will hope for stronger than usual winds in China in Au­gust!

Daniel Thomp­son from Forth Moun­tain, and Dan Quaid from Screen, who are known as The Two Dans, have been sail­ing an In­ter­na­tional 420 for two years, hav­ing started sail­ing to­gether in the Boat Club and have been se­lected to rep­re­sent Ire­land at two events this sum­mer in­clud­ing the Euro­pean Cham­pi­onships in Ses­im­bra, Por­tu­gal from July 3 to 11.

They will also com­plete in the 420 Con­naughts in Lough Ree in July, af­ter the Euro­peans, fol­lowed clos­esly by the Na­tion­als in Howth and Ul­ster in Septem­ber.

Harry Thomp­son will also com­pete at th­ese Ir­ish com­pe­ti­tions. He started sail­ing a 420 with Helm from Malahide and re­cently came se­cond in the Ice­breaker series in Howth, and third in the Le­in­ster Cham­pi­onships in Sil­ver Fleet.

The club will also see a num­ber of mem­bers com­petit­ing in Ir­ish events this sum­mer in­clud­ing: Becky Lowney, Aoife Mur­phy and Emma Lynch.

On the adult side of the club, Paul Ebrill will com­pete in the Laser Ra­dial Masters Worlds in Dun Laoghaire in Septem­ber while Ro­nan Wal­lace was sev­enth in the Euro­pean Ra­di­als in La Rochelle, France last month.

The club is host­ing the Ir­ish Top­per Na­tion­als on July 6, 7 and 8, and will wel­come 80 sailors, aged 10 to 15, and their par­ents, in­clud­ing ten from the British team. The rac­ing will take place in Wex­ford Har­bour with four races a day over the three days. The host club will have about ten sailors com­pet­ing.
