Man fac­ing 24 charges of sex­ual as­sault

TWENTY-FOUR sex­ual as­sault charges were tabled at the Dis­trict Court sit­ting in Wex­ford as a man from the New Ross area was brought be­fore Judge Ger­ard Haughton.

For­mal ev­i­dence of ar­rest, charge and cau­tion was given to the court by a garda who called out the num­bers of the two dozen charge sheets to the judge.

Sergeant Gary Rayner con­firmed that it was in­tended to bring the mat­ter to a higher court and he ap­plied suc­cess­fully to have the mat­ter ad­journed for prepa­ra­tion of a book of ev­i­dence.

The de­fen­dant, who was born in the late 1950s, was rep­re­sented dur­ing the brief hear­ing by solic­i­tor Eric Fur­long.

Mr Fur­long was as­signed to the case on le­gal aid af­ter con­firm­ing that his client is not in work.

The de­fen­dant left court af­ter sign­ing a bail bond, agree­ing to have no con­tact with al­legedly any in­jured party and to sur­ren­der his pass­port.
