Overflowing bins a stain on our streets
A WEXFORD councillor has called on the authorities to ‘think outside the box’ when it comes to upkeep of the town’s main street.
Cllr George Lawlor was responding to concerns expressed on social media in relation to littering and, in particular, the staining of streets and pathways from overflowing bins. The issue was highlighted by jeweller Frank Hynes on Facebook and considerable debate followed.
Cllr Lawlor acknowledged that the main street was the centrepiece of commercial activity and the council needed to invest properly in its maintenance, but accepted that in the recent heatwave conditions the streets and paving were looking particularly grubby.
‘However, it is a problem that has been there for some time and needs now to be tackled in a manner that is different to what we have been doing in the past. Conventional power washing is clearly not enough in getting rid of the food and drink staining that’s occurring and which is giving a tremendously bad impression to visitors and locals alike.’
He pointed out that the pedestrianisation and paving of the street had cost €6 million and thus required proper investment to maintain its image.
