‘Educate Together’ school is proposed

A multi-denominational educational group is considering the possibility of opening a new primary school in Wexford.

Educate Together, a national body which facilitates groups of parents to open multi-denominational schools, named Wexford and Gorey as two towns in which they hope to open new schools.

‘Over the past number of years, we have been contacted by a number of people in all developing towns on the east coast,’ said the body’s chief executive, Paul Rowe.

‘We have opened a school in Wicklow town this year, and one in Waterford the year before last. We are aware of considerable interest in Wexford and down the coast.’

In order for a new school to get off the ground, a public meeting will have to be called in potential locations. ‘We will see if we have a nucleus of people to establish a new school,’ he said.

‘We are actively discussing the possibility of meeting in Gorey or Wexford.’

Educate Together is an Irish initiative and is 90 per cent funded by public donations. It also receives a government grant as a recognised management body. It has 31 schools across the country.
